**PrintPal for ChatGPT** is a free ChatGPT app made by [PrintPal](https://printpal.io/) that connects ChatGPT to PrintPal's 3D printing platform through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Once it is connected, ChatGPT can search a community library of printable STL, 3MF and OBJ models, run print-cost, filament, layer-height and volumetric-flow calculators, answer troubleshooting questions with citations from PrintPal's vendor-neutral wiki, and walk you through Arduino and ESP32 build guides.

When the model you want does not exist yet, ChatGPT hands off to PrintPal's [AI 3D generator](https://printpal.io/3dgenerator) or the [AI CAD agent](https://printpal.io/ai-cad-modeler) with your prompt already filled in. Everything is free and works without a PrintPal account.

- No account, sign-in or OAuth. The server is public and stateless, so nothing is stored between calls.
- PrintPal only sees the tool inputs the assistant sends (search text, calculator numbers, a model id). It does not see your conversation.
- No personal data is collected and nothing is used for AI training.
- Links back to printpal.io carry a `utm_source` tag so we can see which assistant sent the visit; no identifier is attached.
- Your optional API key is only sent to printpal.io and only unlocks credit-based AI generation.
- PrintPal for ChatGPT does not slice files, control printers, place orders or take payments.

## FAQ

### What is the PrintPal app for ChatGPT?

PrintPal for ChatGPT is a free app that connects ChatGPT to PrintPal, a 3D printing platform. It lets ChatGPT search printable 3D models, calculate print costs and calibration values, troubleshoot failed prints with cited wiki articles, follow Arduino and ESP32 build guides, and hand off to PrintPal's AI 3D generator or AI CAD agent.

### Is PrintPal for ChatGPT free?

Yes. Every search, calculator, troubleshooting and build-guide tool is free and needs no account. AI 3D generation returns a link to printpal.io, where free accounts include monthly generations. If you add a PrintPal API key, ChatGPT can run generation directly using your credits.

### Can ChatGPT make an STL file for 3D printing?

With PrintPal, yes. Ask ChatGPT to generate a model and it opens PrintPal's AI 3D generator with your prompt prefilled, which exports STL, OBJ or GLB. For dimensioned functional parts, ChatGPT writes a CAD brief for PrintPal's AI CAD agent, which produces editable OpenSCAD and exports STL, 3MF or STEP.

### Does ChatGPT download the model files to my computer?

No. ChatGPT finds the model and shows a card that links to its page on printpal.io, where you download the STL, 3MF or OBJ files. If you want files saved straight into a project folder, use the PrintPal plugin for Cursor or the Blender, Cura and OrcaSlicer add-ons.

### Do I need a PrintPal account or API key?

No. The PrintPal server works anonymously. An API key from printpal.io/api-keys is only needed if you want ChatGPT to run AI 3D generation itself instead of handing you a link.

### What does PrintPal see from my ChatGPT conversation?

Only the inputs ChatGPT sends to a tool, such as a search phrase or the numbers for a cost calculation. PrintPal does not receive your conversation, does not collect personal data and does not use requests for training.

### Can I use PrintPal in a Custom GPT?

Yes. Import https://printpal.io/mcp/openapi.json in the GPT builder under Configure, Actions, Import from URL. Each PrintPal tool is also available as a REST endpoint.

### Can PrintPal for ChatGPT slice my model or start a print?

No. It does not slice, control printers, place orders or take payments. Use your slicer for that, or the PrintPal plugins for OrcaSlicer and Cura to pull models and calculators into the slicer itself.
