What is Volumetric Flow Rate?

Volumetric flow rate is the volume of plastic your hotend must melt and push through the nozzle per second, measured in mm³/s. It's the most important limiting factor for print speed.

The Formula

Volumetric Flow = Layer Height × Line Width × Print Speed

Why Does It Matter?

Every hotend has a maximum volumetric flow rate. If your print settings demand more flow than your hotend can deliver, you'll get under-extrusion, layer adhesion issues, and poor print quality — even if your printer's motion system can move faster.

Typical Hotend Flow Limits

Stock PTFE-lined (Ender 3, etc.): 8-12 mm³/s
All-metal (Micro Swiss, E3D V6): 12-18 mm³/s
High-flow (Rapido, Dragon HF): 25-35 mm³/s
CHT Nozzle: 30-45 mm³/s
Bambu Lab hotend: 28-32 mm³/s

Tips for Increasing Flow

Upgrade to a high-flow hotend (Rapido, Dragon HF)
