Filaments that do more than hold a shape
Most filaments are judged by strength or looks. These three are functional: they burn, clean, or conduct electricity.
The three filaments
| Filament | Superpower | Ideas |
|---|---|---|
| TimeMass Fire Gen 2 (Timeplast) | Designed to burn in a controlled way | Custom-shaped candles, fire sculptures, fire starters |
| TimeMass Detergent (Timeplast) | Prints a bar that cleans with water. Scented versions exist | Personalized soap, gift sets, branded hotel or spa soap |
| Conductive PLA (Proto-pasta) | Carbon-filled PLA that conducts electricity | Touch sensors, simple low-voltage circuits, interactive projects |
Things to know before printing
- Timeplast TimeMass filaments are experimental, water-based materials. Timeplast recommends a 0.8 mm nozzle, drying the spool before use, and its build plate. Supervise Fire prints when burning them, in a ventilated space. Detergent prints are for external use only.
- Conductive PLA is far more resistive than metal wire. It suits sensors and low-current circuits, not power wiring. Print it slowly, and consider a hardened nozzle for long-term use with filled filaments.
- Dry any specialty filament properly. The filament drying guide has temperatures and times.
Why it matters for makers and sellers
Unusual materials make products stand out: scented soap with a custom logo, a candle shaped like a pet, or an interactive print that lights up when touched. Not sure which material fits a project? Try the filament finder.
FAQ
Can I print these on a normal 3D printer?
Yes. All three are 1.75 mm FDM filaments. Check each maker's recommended nozzle and settings.
Are 3D printed candles safe?
Only use filament made for burning, like Fire Gen 2, and follow the maker's safety guidance. Never burn regular PLA or PETG.
