What Is a 3D Printed Lithophane Lamp Shade?

A lithophane is a thin 3D printed panel that reveals an image when backlit. When you place it in front of an LED light, the varying print thickness creates light and dark areas, turning a regular photograph into a glowing picture. PrintPal's free lithophane generator lets you skip the CAD work and go straight from photo to print-ready STL.

How to Create a Lithophane on PrintPal

  1. Open PrintPal.io and navigate to the Tools section in the main menu.
  2. Find the Lithophane / Lamp Shade Generator in the tool list.
  3. Upload your picture — JPG or PNG works best. High-contrast photos with clear subjects (portraits, pets, landscapes) produce the most striking results.
  4. Adjust the settings: tweak thickness, layer height, image brightness/contrast, and the negative/positive toggle to preview how the image will look when lit.
  5. Toggle the "Make it a stand" option if you want a built-in base so the shade sits upright on a flat surface.
  6. Download the STL file and send it to your slicer.
  • Material: White PLA or white PETG gives the cleanest light transmission. Avoid dark or translucent filaments.
  • Layer height: 0.08–0.12 mm balances detail and print time. Thinner layers reveal finer image detail.
  • Infill: 100% infill is recommended for lithophanes — any internal gaps will show through and distort the image.
  • Walls: At least 3–4 perimeter walls help maintain structural integrity and consistent thickness.
  • Speed: Print slower than usual (40–50 mm/s) to keep layer consistency across the varying thickness of the panel.

Lighting & Display Ideas

  • Drop in a warm white LED strip behind the shade for a cozy nightlight effect.
  • Use addressable RGB LEDs to cycle colors and create animated photo displays.
  • Print a matching base with a slot for a USB-powered LED puck light for a clean, cable-free look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PrintPal lithophane generator free?
Yes. The tool is free to use with no account required for basic generation.

What image format should I upload?
JPG and PNG are supported. Use the highest resolution available for sharper detail.

Can I use the lamp shade with any 3D printer?
Yes. The downloaded STL works with FDM printers that have at least a 180 x 180 mm build plate for standard shades.

Do I need supports?
Most lithophane lamp shades are designed to print without supports thanks to their gentle overhangs.
