Best free CAD software for 3D printing in 2026
The best free CAD software for 3D printing depends on what you make: Tinkercad for absolute beginners, Fusion (personal use) or Onshape for functional parts, FreeCAD for a fully open-source option, OpenSCAD for code-driven designs, and Blender for organic sculpting. This guide compares all of them, plus AI CAD, with license terms checked in October 2026.
- Total beginner: Tinkercad. It's free, runs in a browser, and you build parts by dragging and combining shapes.
- Mechanical and functional parts: Autodesk Fusion for personal use (free, non-commercial, 10 editable documents) or Onshape Free (browser-based, but every document is public). Want no strings at all? FreeCAD.
- Code-driven, parametric designs: OpenSCAD. You write a short script, change one number, and the whole part resizes.
- Organic sculpting: Blender, for figurines, creatures and anything without straight edges.
- No install, no CAD skills: PrintPal's CAD Agent turns a plain-English description into editable OpenSCAD in your browser. For organic shapes, the AI 3D Model Generator builds a mesh from text or a photo.

Direct, parametric, code or sculpting: pick a modelling style first
The modelling style matters more than the brand. Each style is good at different parts, and switching styles later is harder than switching apps.
| Style | How it works | Great for | Weak at | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct (shape-based) | Drag, stretch and combine solids, or push and pull faces | Quick, simple parts and first designs | Changing a dimension after the fact | Tinkercad, SketchUp, Shapr3D, Plasticity |
| Parametric (feature history) | Sketch with dimensions and constraints, then extrude, fillet and pattern; every step stays editable | Functional parts that need precise fits and revisions | A slower start; organic shapes | Fusion, Onshape, FreeCAD |
| CSG / code | Describe the part in a script built from primitives and boolean operations | Families of sizes, customizers, version control | Freeform curves; people who dislike code | OpenSCAD, CAD Agent |
| Mesh sculpting | Push and pull millions of triangles like digital clay | Characters, creatures, textures | Exact dimensions, holes that fit screws | Blender, AI mesh generators |
Rule of thumb: if the part touches another object (a screw, a shelf, a battery), use parametric or code-based CAD. If it only has to look good, sculpt it.
Tinkercad: the best CAD software for beginners
Tinkercad is Autodesk's free, browser-based modeller. You build everything from primitive shapes (boxes, cylinders, text) plus "hole" shapes that subtract, so most people print a name tag or phone stand in their first hour.
It imports STL, OBJ and SVG files up to 25 MB and exports STL, OBJ, glTF/GLB, and SVG for laser cutting. The ceiling is low, though. There's no feature history, so changing a wall thickness on a finished design means editing shapes one by one.
Good for: first prints, classrooms, signs, keychains and simple organizers.
Outgrown when: you need fillets, precise fits, or a design you'll revise often.
Tinkercad vs Fusion 360: when to graduate
Autodesk Fusion (still widely called Fusion 360) is the step up most hobbyists take. It's full parametric CAD with constrained sketches, an editable timeline, assemblies, freeform modelling and basic CAM for CNC.
The personal-use license is free, but as of October 2026 it comes with conditions:
- Non-commercial only. Home-based projects by individuals earning under US$1,000 a year from them.
- 10 active, editable documents. Older designs stay stored but read-only until you deactivate another one and swap them back in.
- Printing exports are covered. STEP, STL and OBJ export are included, and Save As Mesh writes 3MF. Several commercial translators, simulation and generative design are not.
- Limited mesh-to-solid. Convert Mesh offers only the Faceted method; the cleaner Prismatic method needs a paid license.
Graduate from Tinkercad when you catch yourself redrawing a part because one measurement changed. In Fusion you edit the sketch dimension and the whole model rebuilds.
Onshape free plan: professional CAD in a browser, in public
Onshape is cloud-native parametric CAD that runs in any modern browser (Chromebooks included) and in iOS and Android apps. The Free plan includes part, assembly, drawing and sheet-metal tools, version control and real-time collaboration, with unlimited public storage.
The catch is privacy. Under Onshape's terms, every document created on the Free plan is public, and anyone may view, copy, modify and even sell what's in it. The plan is also licensed for non-commercial use only. That's ideal for open-source projects and learning, and a dealbreaker for a product you plan to sell.
Heads up: don't model anything confidential on Onshape Free, such as a client's part or an invention you might patent. Paid plans add private documents.
FreeCAD vs Fusion 360: open source vs polish
FreeCAD is a free, open-source parametric modeller for Windows, macOS and Linux. Version 1.0 arrived in November 2024, and the current stable release is 1.1.4 (September 2026). The next version, 26.3, is in release-candidate testing as FreeCAD moves to three calendar-versioned releases a year.
You pay for FreeCAD's freedom in learning time. The interface is split into workbenches (Sketcher, Part Design, Mesh and others), and following a tutorial matters more than it does in Fusion.
| Question | FreeCAD | Fusion (personal use) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free |
| Commercial use | Allowed | Not allowed |
| Editable document limit | None | 10 active documents |
| Account required | No | Yes, files are cloud-saved |
| Learning curve | Steeper; workbench-based interface | Gentler; huge tutorial library |
| Exports for printing | STEP, STL, OBJ, 3MF, AMF | STEP, STL, OBJ, 3MF |
OpenSCAD: code-driven CAD for parametric parts
OpenSCAD builds models from a script. You combine cubes, cylinders and spheres with union(), difference() and intersection(), and expose dimensions as variables. Change one number and the part regenerates, which makes it perfect for "the same bracket in five sizes".
The last formal stable release is still 2021.01. Most users run the development snapshots instead (2026 builds are available), which include the much faster Manifold geometry engine you can switch on in Preferences. Both export STL, 3MF, AMF and OFF.
// Parametric spacer: change the numbers, re-render
outer_d = 20; // mm
hole_d = 8.4; // M8 bolt clearance
height = 10;
difference() {
cylinder(d = outer_d, h = height, $fn = 64);
translate([0, 0, -1]) cylinder(d = hole_d, h = height + 2, $fn = 48);
}
New to the language? The OpenSCAD tutorial walks you through your first printable part.
Blender for 3D printing: sculpting, not engineering
Blender is free, open-source software for modelling, sculpting, animation and rendering. The current long-term-support release is Blender 5.2 LTS, updated to 5.2.3 on 22 October 2026. For dragons, busts, terrain and cosplay pieces, its sculpt mode is unmatched among free tools.
It's a mesh tool, so it doesn't think in dimensions and constraints the way CAD does. Set scene units to millimetres before you start, apply modifiers on export, and make sure the mesh is closed. STL, OBJ and PLY export are built in; 3MF needs a free extension from Blender's extensions site.
Not for: a bracket that has to fit an M4 bolt. You can do it, but it's like writing a letter in a spreadsheet.
AI CAD: describe the part, get editable OpenSCAD
Text-to-CAD tools write the model for you. PrintPal's CAD Agent takes a plain-English description, writes OpenSCAD code and renders it in your browser. Because the output is code rather than a frozen mesh, you can change dimensions afterwards instead of regenerating from scratch.
- Simple mode (the default): a chat, a 3D viewer and an Adjust tab that turns the model's parameters into sliders. No code on screen.
- Advanced mode: the code editor, modelling toolbars, Build, Code and Sketch modes, and extra export formats.
- Libraries built in: BOSL2 and MCAD are bundled, so threads, gears and rounded shapes come from proven library modules.
- Exports: STL and 3MF in both modes. Advanced mode adds STEP, OFF and the
.scadsource. - Cost: editing, previews and exports are free; AI generations are metered in credits.
About the STEP export: it's a faceted solid. Each triangle of the rendered model becomes a flat face, so Fusion, Onshape or FreeCAD open it as a frozen body you can measure and build around, not a smooth BRep with true cylinders. Keep the .scad file as your editable source.
AI CAD is strongest on prismatic, functional parts like brackets, boxes, adapters and mounts. For organic shapes, use the AI 3D Model Generator instead: it turns a text prompt or a photo into a mesh you can download as STL, GLB, OBJ or PLY. The AI CAD Agent guide covers the full workflow, and the text-to-CAD prompting guide shows how to word requests with dimensions and tolerances.

A desk-edge cable clip for a desktop 18 to 25 mm thick: a C-shaped clamp with 2.5 mm walls, three open slots on top for 6 mm cables, and 0.3 mm clearance on the clamp. It should print flat without supports.
Autodesk Fusion alternatives worth knowing
If Fusion's 10-document cap or non-commercial clause gets in the way, these are the realistic swaps as of October 2026:
- Onshape Free: the closest feature match, in a browser. The price is that your designs are public.
- FreeCAD: no limits and commercial use allowed, with a steeper learning curve.
- SketchUp Free: browser-only push/pull modelling for non-commercial use. It exports STL but can't import other files on the free plan, and its only solid tool is Outer Shell, so check models are closed before slicing.
- Shapr3D Basic: pleasant on an iPad, but limited to 2 projects and low-resolution STL/3MF exports, so curves print visibly faceted.
- Plasticity: a paid, one-off purchase for fast direct NURBS modelling. The free trial only exports OBJ and STL and is non-commercial.
- OpenSCAD or CAD Agent: if you'd rather type than click.
How to choose your first CAD program in 6 steps
- Name the next three things you want to print. Brackets and enclosures point to parametric CAD; figurines point to Blender; a sign or keychain is a Tinkercad afternoon.
- Check the license against your plans. Selling prints? Fusion personal use, Onshape Free and SketchUp Free are non-commercial. FreeCAD, OpenSCAD and Blender are open source and allow commercial use.
- Pick browser or desktop. On a Chromebook or a locked-down school laptop, use Tinkercad, Onshape, SketchUp Free or CAD Agent. A capable desktop runs anything.
- Finish one full project before judging a tool. Design, export, slice and print a single part. The 3D printing design guide covers wall thickness, overhangs and tolerances that apply in every program.
- Export the right file. Send 3MF or STL to the slicer and keep a STEP or native file for edits; 3D printing file formats explains which is which. For several colours, model each colour as its own body and see the multicolor 3D printing guide.
- Check dimensions before slicing. Open the export in a viewer and confirm it measures what you designed, especially if you switched between inches and millimetres.
You want to sell 3D-printed brackets on Etsy and need free parametric CAD that's licensed for commercial use. Which fits?
FreeCAD is open source, so commercial use is allowed. Fusion personal use, Onshape Free and SketchUp Free are all licensed for non-commercial use only, and Onshape Free would also make your designs public.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free CAD software for 3D printing beginners?
Tinkercad is the easiest start: it is free, runs in a web browser and builds parts by combining simple shapes. When you need precise, editable dimensions, move up to a parametric tool such as Autodesk Fusion for personal use, Onshape Free or FreeCAD.
Is Fusion 360 still free for hobbyists in 2026?
Yes. As of October 2026, Autodesk Fusion for personal use is free for non-commercial projects by individuals earning under US$1,000 a year from them. It is limited to 10 active editable documents and excludes some features such as simulation, but it still exports STEP, STL, OBJ and 3MF.
Is FreeCAD better than Fusion 360?
FreeCAD is better if you want open-source software with no account, no document limits and commercial use allowed. Fusion is more polished and easier to learn, but its free personal-use license is non-commercial and capped at 10 editable documents.
Is the Onshape free plan really free?
Yes, Onshape Free costs nothing and includes professional parametric CAD in a browser. The trade-off is that it is for non-commercial use only and every document you create is public, so anyone can view, copy and reuse your designs.
Can AI make CAD models for 3D printing?
Yes. Text-to-CAD tools such as PrintPal's CAD Agent turn a plain-English description into editable OpenSCAD code and export STL or 3MF for your slicer. They work best on functional parts like brackets and boxes; for organic shapes, an AI mesh generator is the better fit.
